Altınkum: Didim's Blue Flag Beach

Altınkum: Didim's Blue Flag Beach

The most visited spot in Didim, Aydın, is Altınkum Beach: 750 metres long, 15 metres wide, and the first choice for locals and tourists all summer thanks to its sea and sand quality. Along the shore you'll find hotels, restaurants, cafés and bars, so a day here can mean swimming and socialising in equal measure — Altınkum is both Didim's symbol and the heart of its tourism economy.

Altınkum lies just south of central Didim, along the coastline of the neighbourhood that shares its name. Its popularity comes from three things coming together: fine, golden sand, clear water that stays shallow near the shore, and a dense strip of hotels, restaurants and cafés right behind it. That combination makes it appealing both as a family holiday spot and for a day trip from elsewhere in the region. In summer, sunbeds, water-sports rentals and late-night venues line the beach; by day it's a calm family beach, by evening a lively seafront.

What Does the Blue Flag Award Mean?

The Blue Flag is an international environmental certification that began in France in 1985 and today applies in many countries, including Turkey, where it is run by the Turkish Environmental Education Foundation. The assessment covers five main areas:

  • Education: activities are run to raise visitors' awareness of the environment and nature.
  • Information: visitors are informed about the area's wildlife, plant life and environmental features.
  • Monitoring: regular on-site checks track the condition of the beach and sea.
  • Management: local volunteers and the municipality work together to maintain standards.
  • Safety: lifeguard cover, first aid and visitor-safety arrangements are required.

Seawater is tested regularly against a four-year average, and the flag is withdrawn if pollution is detected. So the Blue Flag isn't just an award — it's a continuously audited quality guarantee.

Is Altınkum Beach Open to Everyone?

Yes — Altınkum is a free public beach open to all. You can reach it by car or public transport, and its clear water with a gentle, shallow start makes it a safe option for families with children as well as confident swimmers. Showers, changing cabins, and shops and a pharmacy within walking distance round out the beach's everyday practicality.

Nearby Places Worth Visiting

For those who want to turn an Altınkum visit into more than a beach day, the surrounding historical and natural sites are easy to reach:

  • Miletus Ancient Site — about 35 minutes; the remains of one of the ancient world's major harbour cities.
  • Manastır Cove — about 20 minutes; known for its calm, clear water and sunset views.
  • Lake Bafa — about 30 minutes; one of the Aegean region's largest lakes, also popular for birdwatching.
  • Barış Parkı — 3 minutes on foot; the central park where the Didim Peace Festival is also held.

These nearby spots make it easy to pair your beach day with history and nature — a car or taxi is enough to build a half-day route around them.
